ABSTRACT

Scleritis is inflammation of the sclera, which is less common but more serious than episcleritis. Patients present with redness of the sclera (i.e. if you try moving the dilated vessels with a cotton bud, they will not budge), severe ocular pain and photophobia. Repeated episodes of scleritis can result in thinning of this membrane over time – scleromalacia – which is seen as a blue-tinged area in the sclera. This area is prone to perforation (scleromalacia perforans). All of these changes can occur with RA.
