ABSTRACT

For each of the following scenarios, select the most likely underlying bleeding disorder. Each option may be used once, more than once or not at all.

1. A 14-year-old boy being treated for meningococcal meningitis begins to bruise easily and bleed from his central line site and peripheral cannula. A full blood count shows a haemoglobin concentration of 9 g/dL, a platelet count of 90 × 109/L and a white blood cell count of 16 × 109/L. Coagulation studies reveal a prolonged PT and APTT, raised D-dimers and reduced fibrinogen levels.
