ABSTRACT

HCR-20 (Webster et al., 1997) This is the most commonly used risk assessment instrument in the UK. It provides a framework for a SCA approach, based on 20 evidence-based risk factors. The risk factors are separated into 10 historical factors: • previous violence • young age at first violence • relationship instability • employment problems • substance misuse • major mental illness • psychopathy • early maladjustment • personality disorder (PD) • prior supervision failure five clinical factors (relating to current functioning): • lack of insight • negative attitudes • active symptoms of major mental illness • impulsivity • unresponsive to treatment and five risk management items (relating to predictions about the future): • plans lack feasibility • exposure to destabilizers • lack of personal support • non-compliance with remediation attempts • stress.
