ABSTRACT

Surgical procedures on the eye in adults can frequently be performed using local anaesthesia. This is not the case in children for whom general anaesthesia will always be required. Procedures necessitating general anaesthesia are listed in Table 34.1, and encompass the entire paediatric age range, including newborn infants. The most common ophthalmic surgical procedure in children is strabismus surgery, while many infants will require general anaesthesia simply to permit a full eye examination.
