ABSTRACT

In previous chapters you were introduced to psychological theories that can help you

improve your self-awareness and practice. You were also introduced to the values-based

approaches that aim to improve your understanding of personal and professional values,

as well as consider concepts such as recovery and thriving. This chapter will now help

you develop skills in appraising and using evidence within your everyday mental health

practice. It is intended as a user-friendly approach to developing the skills required for

delivering evidence-based practice. It uses a case example to explore the origins, nature

and purpose of evidence and its value in achieving best practice. The chapter also

integrates service user perspectives in order to best represent the experiences and needs

of those who access mental health services.
