ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will consider both the understanding and the development of applied

leadership and management skills in mental health nursing. It is relevant to both

pre-registration nurses and those post-registration nurses who wish to develop their

skills in this key area of nursing practice. It offers examples of leadership and

management from a mental health service, illustrating important issues within this

essential domain of nursing practice. The mental health service used in the examples is a

small psychosis service offering psycho-social interventions for people experiencing

psychosis, and for their families. The chapter also offers frequent learning opportunities

from mental health practice which can be undertaken individually or within a group to

further the understanding of these concepts.
