Every mother has come to expect her newborn infant to undergo a heel prick test within a few days of birth and she looks forward to this with a mixture of apprehension and reassurance: apprehension that her baby has to go through what appears to be a painful test but at the same time reassurance that the test will identify congenital disorders that her infant may have in order for treatment to be initiated quickly.
