Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common complication in patients with cancer. For women with cancer, the incidence of VTE is increased during treatment with chemotherapy, hormonal agents, as well as during exposure to the usual risk factors for VTE such as surgery and hospitalization. The development of VTE not only increases morbidity, but it is also associated with poorer survival compared with patients with cancer who do not have thrombotic complications. This chapter will review the pathogenesis, epidemiology, prevention and treatment of VTE in women with cancer. Aspects that are unique to women with breast cancer and gynecologic malignancies will be highlighted.
