Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a common, life-threatening, yet still misdiagnosed and mistreated disease. Many aspects of the management of PE have changed significantly in recent years, whereas others have not. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is rarely life-threatening, but its management can have lasting consequences. Also, it is frequently associated with PE. This chapter summarizes key aspects of diagnosis and treatment of PE and DVT. Readers are referred to key texts and longer reviews for specific areas of interest.
