Venous thrombosis occurs in about 1 per 1000 individuals per year in the general population and different environmental and biologic – acquired or congenital – conditions may increase the risk. Pregnancy is an important risk factor for venous thrombosis especially in the presence of additional risk factors such as bed rest, twin pregnancy, congenital thrombophilia, and antiphospholipid syndrome. More recently, severe, potentially life-threatening, thrombosis has been shown to be associated with the ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), a complication of ovulation induction or ovarian stimulation during in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment.
