In Chapter 1 the intrinsic role of the midwife within health promotion has been recognized and discussed in some detail. When formulating a new curriculum for a ‘direct entry’ programme of Diploma in Midwifery Studies in the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, King’s College London, the health promotion aspect was considered very carefully. The overall aim of the curriculum is to ‘define standards that will enable childbearing women and babies to achieve optimum health and wellbeing’ (Department of Health (DoH) 2003a) and there is much that has influenced the creation of this curriculum. To achieve this aim, the professional and Government agendas need to be followed and the student as an individual needs to be acknowledged.
