ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to give an overview of what rehabilitation entails, models of service delivery, and the principles behind the rehabilitation approach, with emphasis on the medical issues that neurologists and neurorehabilitation physicians will be called upon to manage in the context of neurological rehabilitation and long-term conditions. Neurological disorders are heterogeneous in their presentation and impact, and many have the potential to lead to long-term disability. Neurological rehabilitation is known to be beneficial in the post-acute phase of recovery from stroke, spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury, but has also been shown to be beneficial in more chronic progressive conditions, such as multiple sclerosis and movement disorders. The rehabilitation medical team is key in history taking and collating information between several specialties and it is vital for accurate and detailed information to therefore be provided by the referring neurology, neurosurgery and stroke teams to facilitate smooth and safe transfer of care.
