ABSTRACT

Find out what NGTs are used in your care setting. You may also be able to look at these tubes in the skills laboratory. What are their key features?

ACTIVITY

NGTs used for feeding people vary according to care setting but should be fine-bore

feeding tubes. A decision must be made whether or not to insert a tube within 24

hours of identifying the need and appropriateness of enteral feeding. Consent must

be gained from the patient and any potential contraindications to passing the NGT

should be identified:

Any of the above should be discussed with the clinical team as the doctor or

gastroenterology team may be required to insert the NGT under radiological guidance.
