ABSTRACT
Surgery leads to acute postoperative pain as a result of tissue damage arising from
the surgical procedure. As well as pain, noxious stimuli will increase sympathetic
activity, resulting in raised blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen consumption, muscle
tension and sphincter tone in the bladder and bowels (MacIntyre and Ready 2007).
These are frequently cited signs and symptoms of acute pain. However, because of
