ABSTRACT

Community-acquired pneumonia, healthcare-related pneumonia, hospital-acquired pneumonia and ventilatorassociated pneumonia (VAP) are different definitions for lower airway infection. The classification of patients is sometimes difficult and depends on the time and setting of the acquisition of infection. The term hospital-acquired pneumonia is used when clinical symptoms appear more than 48 hours after hospital admission while VAP is considered when pneumonia develops after 48 hours of intubation.
