ABSTRACT

Pneumonia is not only the most common organ-affecting infection after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT), but also is the infection with the highest mortality.

Improvement in the overall result of allogeneic SCT has mainly resulted from improvements in the prophylaxis, diagnosis, and treatment of this life-threatening complication post transplant. The underlying disease and the treatment prior to SCT, especially intensive chemo-or radiotherapy and complications during this time period may increase the risk for some patients.
