The role of the board and its directors, including the executive medical director

Introduction This chapter will describe a typical NHS board of a foundation trust and the role of the executive medical director within it. Many chapters in this book refer to the role of the medical director and this chapter describes it in detail. It is also worth noting that the role of the medical director in private healthcare organizations as described by Empey and Peskett in Chapter 20 is different in its scope from the role in NHS organizations.
