ABSTRACT

Diseases derived from leptomeningeal melanocytes have intrigued physicians for generations. Their original descriptions were contributed by among the most prominent pathologists. Diffuse leptomeningeal melanoma was first reported by Virchow (1859). Not much later, in 1861, Rokitansky (1861) detailed the rare phakomatosis, neurocutaneous melanosis, in a 14-year-old girl.
