ABSTRACT
Cervical spine cord injuries are really very rare (< 50 per million per annum). Their incidence has not changed despite the introduction of stringent protocols for pre-hospital care, but the outcome does seem to have improved. However, the single factor which has been shown to make the largest difference to length of stay in hospital, and indeed to eventual outcome, is referral to a specialist spinal injuries unit.
