ABSTRACT

Surgical intervention for the intra-abdominal testes is considered essential for the preservation of testicular function and monitoring for testicular cancer later in adulthood. In the 1990s, laparoscopy became an established technique in the management of intra-abdominal testes. Once the testis is localized on diagnostic laparoscopy, an open definitive surgical procedure(s) may be considered. Alternatively, orchidopexy or orchidectomy can be carried out laparoscopically in one or two stages. The choice of procedure is dependent on:

• the condition and level of the undescended testes, • the age and circumstances of the patient, • whether a unilateral or bilateral procedure is required, • the surgeon’s preference and/or expertise.
