ABSTRACT

The terms that require clarification when discussing practice development in community nursing are many and varied. Before presenting examples of practice development in community nursing in subsequent chapters of this book, it is essential that a shared meaning of the terms that are in common use be provided. This chapter will start by discussing the term ‘practice development’ itself, to arrive at a definition that encompasses the range of activities community nurses are engaged in to improve their practice. It will then move on to an analysis of some of the other terms that come under, or are associated with, practice development.
