ABSTRACT

Introduction Whatever setting nurses work in, they have a vital role in patient care and health promotion. Nurses are held accountable for their actions and omissions and should work within a clinical governance system that supports the development of their abilities. This chapter introduces clinical governance, discusses how it developed, and explains how its constituent parts support effective nursing practice.By using the different aspects of clinical governance, nurses can demonstrate accountability to themselves, their patients, peers and managers, and their professional body, in your case the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Clinical governance is a framework that allows health care workers to assure different people, and different groups of people, that care is delivered to a certain standard. It is a concept that brings true accountability into health care.
