ABSTRACT
An understanding of the use of prostheses and orthoses requires knowledge of various aspects of gait, surgery and rehabilitation. Normal gait is the basis for evaluating the amputee and the pathological ambulation. The physician should educate the patient regarding limitations and expectations when a prosthesis is prescribed or when an orthosis is used, and how these appliances may potentially improve patient function.
