The essential component of the system is the neurone, the nerve cell body with its dendrites and its prolongation, the axon (Fig. 113.1). The nerve fibre is defined as the axon, its axolemma and the enveloping Schwann cells. The Schwann cell is far more than a supporting element, for

without it the development, maturation, survival and regeneration of the neurone cannot occur. Nerve fibres possess two special properties, both of which are ATP driven; both are blocked by anoxia.
