ABSTRACT

It has been estimated that approximately 60 per cent of all cancers are related to environmental exposures or lifestyle choices.1 Components of the diet and cigarette smoking are, by far, the most important of these. Increasingly, information is becoming available on genetic causes of several tumours with hereditary cancer syndromes being identified. The marked increase in the use of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and improved cure rates of several malignancies have resulted in a large number of individuals who are at a greater risk of developing second primary tumours.
