Status epilepticus (SE) is common in pediatric practice, particularly in infants: 40 per cent of all SE occurs in children under 2 years.1-4 In a prospective study of patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy, 9 per cent of 613 children had had one or more episodes of SE by the time of diagnosis.5 In a long-term follow-up study of a populationbased cohort of 150 children with epilepsy, 27 per cent had at least one episode of SE, usually within 2 years of onset.6
