Investigation of the child with epilepsy

Seizures may be a symptom of an acute illness that requires timely and specific treatment. The possibility of acute symptomatic seizures should be considered in any child presenting with a first seizure, particularly if the child is febrile or has other evidence of a systemic disturbance. Table 20.1 lists diseases that may manifest with acute symptomatic seizures.
