ABSTRACT

This section illustrates how many of the philosophical values and principles of practice, covered in previous sections, find expression either in the continued development of established services – like secure care, family support, or intensive care – or in more innovative services – such as crisis teams, assertive outreach and liaison psychiatry. This section also includes a consideration of the special needs of women in mental health care, illustrating the importance of assuring emotional and physical security, alongside the offer of meaningful alternatives to hospitalization.
