This 8-year-old right-handed girl was initially seen at age 7.5 years at a rural satellite clinic. She had previously been diagnosed with Benign Epilepsy with Centrotemporal Spikes (BECTS) and had complete seizure control on carbamazepine. However, the pediatrician also noted a history of “developmental delay.” Prior workup had included a normal brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and an electroencephalogram (EEG) report was available, showing frequent bilateral spikes over the centrotemporal regions, activated during sleep.
