ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the literature regarding typologies of juvenile sex offenders, including information about their victims, offenses, and motivations. Although it was once thought that only adults commit serious sex crimes, it is now an accepted fact that children commit them as well (Barbaree, Hudson et al., 1993). The majority of research into juvenile sexual offending has been conducted relatively recently and studies are few in number (Barbaree, Hudson et al., 1993). Research on sex offenders and associated matters have more often than not focused on adults and, although their offenses are often indistinguishable from those of adults, juveniles are not just miniature versions of adults (Barbaree, Marshall et al., 1993; Cashwell and Caruso, 1997).
