ABSTRACT

The social reality of children has undergone tremendous change within the last few decades. These changes have permeated all aspects of children’s lives. Societal expectations of children, specifically those related to family and school, have seen marked transformations resulting in greater behavioral expectations with decreased support systems. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the impact of these changes on the social reality of children, especially those transformations occurring in the family, society, and schools, as well as their influence on school violence. The various explanations of school violence, such as individual, family, peer, school, and community-related influences, will also be discussed. In conclusion, the responses to the incidents of school violence will be examined and their effectiveness investigated.
