ABSTRACT

Understanding antisocial and delinquent behavior among children and young adults has been the subject of social science research for quite some time. Generally, delinquency has been considered to be a male phenomenon. More recent statistics have demonstrated that females are not impervious to delinquency. However, much of the research in the area of juvenile delinquency has focused on understanding male delinquent behavior. Very little, if any, attention has been devoted to understanding the development of similar behavior among girls (Kakar et al., 2002). Until recently, it has been believed that the delinquent behavior of girls does not cause serious problems, because girls have historically constituted a very small proportion of the offender population, and have committed minor and far fewer crimes than boys.
