ABSTRACT

In 1972, the United Nations sponsored the Stockholm Conference and released the Stockholm Declaration on the subject of sustainable development. In the decades since, the forces of globalization have continued to swell. The global economy has expanded and become more integrated, profoundly reshaping the social, cultural, and political landscape of the world, as well as the base of natural resources that support human society. In turn, these changes have helped produce a global awareness of the impact that humanity has on the Earth. Likewise, as humanity has come to realize its impact on the global environment, there has been a shift in the way we think about development, whereas development was once viewed almost entirely in economic terms, we are now beginning to think about the concept of sustainable development.
