ABSTRACT

It is a painful irony that in parts of some developing countries, it is not uncommon for people to fall sick and die of diseases that can be easily prevented and treated. Many people in developing countries do not benefit fully from modern knowledge and technology that could have protected and restored their health. Some communities do not have access to simple remedies of proven efficacy or, where the services are provided, many people fail to make appropriate use of them. Individuals and communities often lack the essential knowledge on how to keep healthy, how to recognize dangerous signs in the individual and hazardous situations in the environment, and how to mobilize resources to solve health problems.
