ABSTRACT

Photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) has the unique ability to image the optical absorption contrast in biological tissue with scalable spatial resolution and penetration depth. Recently, researchers have been investigating the use of PAM for both fundamental biomedical research and for possible clinical uses. A promising potential clinical application is for ophthalmic imaging, by integrating PAM with existing clinical modalities, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO). In this chapter, we rst briey introduce the principles of image acquisition and formation in PAM, especially optical resolution PAM (OR-PAM). en, we describe the stepwise technical development of PAM toward retinal imaging. In the end, in vivo multimodal retinal imaging of rodent eyes is demonstrated and prospects for future development of ophthalmic PAM are discussed.
