ABSTRACT
Recently a major milestone was observed in that over half of the world’s population is now living in urban areas and, furthermore, that this urbanization is going to continue. The nature of urban areas and how we create or modify them will become of greater consequence to all our lives. Governments are paying increasing attention to this urbanization phenomenon (United Nations, World population Prospects: The 2006 Revision, 2007). This is leading to new questions for the scientific community concerning more and more densely populated cities.
