1.1 Introduction to Spine Modelling 1.1.1 Introduction The human spine is one of the important and indispensable structures in the human body. It undertakes many functions, most importantly, providing strength  and support for the remainder of the human body, with particular attention to the heavy bones of the skull, as well as in permitting the body to move in ways such as bending, stretching, rotating, and leaning. Other functions include the protection of nerves, providing a base for the ribs, and offering a means of connecting the upper and lower body via the sacrum and pelvis. However, the human spine is also a very vulnerable part of our skeleton that is susceptible to many diseases and injuries, such as whiplash injury, low back pain, and scoliosis.
