ABSTRACT

In 1969, before the formation of the ASFO, many of these same individuals were the rst forensic odontologists to gain membership in the newly formed Odontology Section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS). is professional organization was restricted to dentists who were already actively engaged in forensic dentistry and also formally associated with a law enforcement agency. Dr. Boyers, however, realized that only those dentists already formally involved as forensic odontologists were eligible for membership in the Academy, and many others interested in the eld would be excluded. e ASFO was created to permit membership to anyone with an interest in forensic odontology, thereby furthering forensic odontology. e organization’s goal then and now is to provide all an opportunity to receive training and establish interactions with others having common interests. e ASFO was ocially incorporated in 1970. In 1971, Robert Boyers was elected as the rst president of the ASFO.
