ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the physics of Radio Frequency (RF) radiation and the known interactions with human tissue and discusses past and present epidemiologic studies. It shows the explosive growth in time of mobile telephony and also explains how this affects the perception of fear of the general public for electromagnetic radiation. The chapter discusses the interaction with the human body. It explores how RF and microwave radiation cannot be directly carcinogenic. The chapter discusses the heating effect of RF and microwave radiation and the exposure limits to prevent adverse health effects for humans. It also discusses the probability and possibility of a causal relationship between long-term RF radiation exposure and cancer. The chapter describes the viewpoint of the World Health Organization that considers RF radiation as possibly carcinogenic for humans and those of leading expert organizations and concludes with current and future epidemiologic research.
