ABSTRACT

Animal models of viral encephalitis are of significant value in aiding the people understanding of the pathogenesis of human disease. The need to increase the people understanding of human neuroviral infections remains a critical focus of infectious disease research. In addition to illustrating major themes of viral encephalitis in animal models, it is hoped that the references provided will also serve to give interested readers ample means to explore the subject matter further. While a few examples were provided to show how animal models are used to develop vaccines or therapeutics to treat viral encephalitis, many more abound. As this chapter hopefully points out, animal models of viral encephalitis have provided a wealth of information that helps the reader understand many aspects of human encephalitis. The great challenge for the future will be to translate additional information from animal studies to meet the many medical needs prevailing in society.
