ABSTRACT

Healthcare choices are complicated and can be diffi cult. Such decision making often occurs when emotions are strong, outcomes are uncertain, and consequences are lifealtering. For example, a diagnosis of breast cancer initiates a series of highly emotional events over which patients may feel they have little control. Women with early-stage breast cancer face decisions at many time points, ranging from surgery and radiation therapy choices to breast reconstruction to adjuvant therapy. (1-5). The consequences of these high-stakes choices have a lasting impact on women and their families.
