ABSTRACT

Most proton therapy facilities are currently based on the passive scattering technique. In the future, it is expected that more and more proton therapy patients will be treated using magnetic beam scanning. Both techniques can deliver a spread-out Bragg peak (SOBP) with a homogeneous target dose for each field, while the latter technique also allows intensity-modulated proton beam therapy. The basic principles are outlined in Figure 14.1 (see Paganetti and Bortfeld, 2005 for details).
