ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION High-profile tragedies involving office surgical procedures have prompted regulation and oversight of office surgical facilities. Tumescent liposuction (liposuction using tumescent local anesthesia), despite an exemplary safety record, has attracted the attention of regulators. The first two sections of the chapter review multiple studies and guidelines that relate to the current status of liposuction. The final section discusses accreditation. Current and future regulation of office surgery will involve accreditation organizations, such as the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), to insure that patient safety standards have been satisfied.
