ABSTRACT

Before the advent of tumescent anesthesia, liposuction was performed using general anesthesia. This form of sedation provided no hemostasis within the adipose layer and was fraught with complications such as hemmorrhage, hematoma formation, prolonged recovery time, disfiguring irregularities of the skin, and large volume fluid shifts. In many cases, blood transfusions and/or large volume intravenous fluids were necessary intra-and postoperatively.
