ABSTRACT

Malaria continues to pose a threat to human life. It is an important cause of

morbidity and mortality. Malaria accounts for over 1 million deaths. Since

only seriously affected individuals are likely to die, the total magnitude of

those infected runs into several millions. Different estimates of the number of infected individuals vary from 150 to about 300-500 million. The more

severe infections, especially with Plasmodium falciparum, may involve multiple organs besides the liver and the hematopoietic system. The occurrence

of the lung complications and the frequent requirement for assisted ventila-

tion for the critically sick patients has aroused great interest in the disease

in pulmonary literature.
