ABSTRACT

In the past 20 years, the technique of endoscopic sinus surgery has developed as the primary surgical procedure for nasal and sinus problems.Themain objective behind this surgery is the reestablishment of the physiological drainage and ventilation of the paranasal sinuses. Pediatric endoscopic sinus surgery (PESS) is performed very conservatively in children who display persistent, debilitating, and refractory chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) despite appropriate therapy. Complicated acute rhinosinusitis is certainly one main reason for sinus surgery. Additionally, children with more serious or debilitating conditions such as immunodeficiency, cystic fibrosis, fungal infections, and tumors can have sinusitis that necessitates surgical treatment using PESS. Although CRS has been one of the main indications for PESS, surgery may be required in fewer instances. Other procedures and treatment with consideration of age, contributory factor, and comormibidity may be helpful prior to PESS. Like chronic serous otitis media, CRS in children may diminish greatly as the child gets to be seven or eight years old. Thus, children with CRS may grow out of their disease (1-3).
