ABSTRACT
ALS is a relentlessly disabling neurological disorder that inevitably progresses to respiratory failure. Without respiratory support, the five year survival is between 10% and 20% (1). ALS is almost always the cause of death in individuals diagnosed with the illness. The nature of ALS and the limited options for treatment force those who suffer from it to face stark decisions about accepting or forgoing treatments that sustain life.
