ABSTRACT

Asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by infiltration of the airways with lymphocytes expressing several Th2-type cytokines including interleukin (IL)-4 (a switch factor for IgE synthesis), IL-5 (an eosinophil growth factor), IL-9 (an inducer of mucus expression), and IL-13 (a cytokine that can induce airway hyperreactivity).
