I. Introduction Studies during the last decade have revealed that the genus Pneumocystis contains many distinct organisms. The genetic and functional diversity exhibited by these organisms indicate that they are evolutionary species. While the number of Pneumocystis species is not known precisely, it is highly probable that every species of mammal has at least one.
