A powerful motive for engaging in research and teaching in environmentalžuiddynamics(EFD)istounderstandand explainthežuidmotionsinthenaturalenvironmentandhow theyrelatetootherprocesses.Oursubjectwastransformed inthe1950sand1960swiththeŸrstphotographsfromspace showingthewholenessoftheEarth’suniquežuidenvironment. However,ataboutthistime,newresearchwarnedusthatthis environmentwasbeingprogressivelythreatenedbybiologicallysigniŸcantlevelsofman-madecontaminationspreading everywherefromthetopoftheatmospheretothebottomofthe oceans (Carson 1962).
